Our Hour of Distinction and Exultation- Article below by Gene Villars of commonsense2me@yahoo.com

I would like to deviate from my usual blog on alternative energy and jump headlong into the world of politics.

After witnessing the fall of a brutal dictator at the hands of a united people joined together by a common cause it left me thinking. The people of Egypt of all races, religions, sex and age in a peaceful but forceful manner brought about a drastic change in a corrupt government and made their voices heard around the world. So you may ask what does this have to do with our own environment and energy policies? Converting to alternative energy and solar is a process that is affordable by all that are passionate about utilizing alternative energy and saving the environment. The answer is plenty. We cannot seem to come to agreement on even the most simple of problems in our own country. We can learn valuable lessons from the events in Egypt and Tunisia about sharing a common goal and coming together as one people to achieve those ends. It seems that more than any time in our brief history we have become divided on nearly every issue that confronts us. The lines of division are deep and visceral and are perpetuated by 24hr news cycle that appear to separate us among party lines. These separations do not benefit we the people, but further empower those with the greatest wealth and influence in our nation to hold onto the power they so desperately try to hold on too.

We all desire positive change in this great nation of ours, but ideologies in the means of achieving these goals are constantly clouded by misinformation and deception. Many people are unable or unwilling to see through the facade of the lies we are constantly bombarded with by the politicians, corporations and the media that further their agendas. It is we the people that pay deeply for this stoicism. We are facing a grave and uncertain future if we continue on this path of disdain for each other. We need to come together as Americans and confront these difficulties in a mature and productive way to bring about the changes needed to provide future generations a lasting and enduring nation.

United as one, we can be the once great nation that we were, but divided we will surely be nothing but a passing footnote in tomorrow’s history books. We are a young nation but must use our wisdom to not repeat yesterday’s mistakes. So my question is “when will our hour of distinction and exultation come”?

Our Changing Environment-Climate Predicts Our Future Article below by Gene Villars of commonsense2me@yahoo.com

Once again the world awaits the results of yet another climate change summit that appears to be another dismal failure on the part of the United Nations. Most certainly with the incoming legislators, who refuse to acknowledge the science behind climate change altogether, the hope of any binding resolutions seem more distant than ever before. Startling new evidence has shown that climate change is not only a reality, but appears to be accelerating at an alarming pace. Thawing of permafrost in the arctic region is causing methane to escape into the atmosphere further endangering us to the tipping point of no return. Rising sea levels have washed the island nation of Lohachara off the face of the earth, and the Marshall Islands, Maldives, Vanuatu, Ghoramara, Carteret islands are all in danger of vanishing forever. I believe at this point the objective for activists is to uncover the misinformation that is circulated through media organizations that are at the beckon call of shameless oil and energy billionaires that only care about profit and power. These are the people who must be exposed from the shadows and brought to the forefront of all political debate before any substantial progress can be made.

I have dedicated most of my life fighting for a cleaner environment since age twelve and now I presently advocate for disaster preparedness and solar awareness through AARDVARK ENVIRONMENTAL SOLAR div. of Venus Perez Publications/Products in the hope of making a difference. After a day of fishing in a stream by my rural home, I proudly came home with a stringer full of bass and bluegill only to be told by my parents we couldn’t eat them because the rivers and the fish in them were toxic and had to be thrown out. The reservoirs in which these streams flowed into were closed to all fishing and the beaches had been closed for swimming. I remember thinking how can we do this to ourselves. The companies responsible for polluting the streams and ground water supply, simply closed their doors and walked away without being held accountable for dumping tons of toxic waste into our environment. Then finally in 1972 the clean water act was passed and many local residents along with state and federal agencies began the massive clean up of our valuable waterways. It took nearly thirty years but finally some of the fish were once again fit for human consumption, that is within certain limits. Then in 2003 the Bush administration reversed many of the policies of the clean water act and once again pollutants began pumping into our streams and wetlands once again. I was recently criticized and actually labeled a cultist for not capitulating to the denialist about the dangers our planet face if we do not act quickly. I make no apologies for my views about global climate change and man’s influence on the environment. My ancestors relied on this land to provide all its life sustaining gifts for thousands of years before my time, and it saddens me to think my children and grandchildren may not be so blessed. During the the 1990′s I worked closely with many companies to take industrial waste and reintroduce what was once land filled, and find uses for their waste for green label certification. Not only were they not paying to bury the waste but were actually profiting in reselling waste. It was an exciting time in which environmentalists and corporations were working closely together to solve the problems we faced as a nation. Sadly with the dismantling of many of our laws and regulations, corporations no longer find it necessary to seek out alternative means to dispose of their waste products and find alternative energy for the future. The argument that we cannot compete with the Chinese if we do not loosen restrictions on corporations is a fallacy that I have seen first hand. So when someone tells me we must work with these people who deny we are in a crises is akin to telling me we must work with the Fox to guard the hen-house.

Can We Be Energy Independent? Article below by Gene Villars of commonsense2me@yahoo.com

I recently came across an article in my local hometown newspaper about the possibility of 300 green jobs may be added to the local economy. This area of the country had been hit especially hard by the loss of most of its manufacturing industry. As is the case with most online newspapers the general public have the option to respond to articles, and they certainly do. I was shocked at the respondents to this particular article as I read many anonymous replies how green technology is some sort of large scale conspiracy by the liberal politicians and oil and energy companies. At first I thought this must be some sort of joke, but much to my dismay these people clearly believe this to be true. I couldn’t just walk away without adding my two cents about how renewable energy benefits them, not the oil and coal industry. I swear I could almost smell the burning torches and hear the angry mobs as they wielded their clubs and pitch forks. Well needless to say 300 jobs walked away from that town to a more friendly location.

With the rise of the new Tea Party, a “grassroots” movement that is funded by Koch oil industries and the misinformation channel, Rupert Murdoch and Fox news, there has been a backlash to the green movement. There isn’t much point in arguing with these people who have bought into the propaganda perpetuated by these oil and energy companies. The best bet for a cheaper, cleaner environment rests mostly upon us to do our own part in achieving energy independence.

Solar energy is one alternative to the high costs of powering a residential home and is one that I am fully committed too. Currently at our home we supply all the hot water we need by way of solar heating. This alone has cut the costs of our home energy needs substantially.

As I now live in Florida with hurricanes and power outages being an issue one can only be prepared. So in the attempt to continue growing with alternative energy and the use of solar, our family has incorporated the All in One Solar Survival Backpack Kit in addition to solar items. The key is to build slowly. Converting to alternative energy and solar is a process that is affordable by all that are passionate about utilizing alternative energy and saving the environment. In the near future we intend to retrofit our home to supply even more solar energy to the point we no longer will be paying for our energy needs. Although many may claim that the payback isn’t worth the investment I would disagree with that point. Every little bit we do to minimize carbon emissions is a step in the right direction. Businesses, educational institutions, health care facilities and government agencies are becoming aware that a green building minimizes their impact on the environment and lower energy and operational costs. The research and development in the solar industry is making giant leaps forward to lower the costs of equipment and increase the efficiency of solar collection.

Nothing in life is free but the sun is our constant companion that gives us the affirmation that today is a new day. With a little investment we can all become energy independent, can anyone tell me how that can be a bad thing. It’s my hope and belief that renewable energy can and will be cost effective for all of us.
